iOS/watchOS Applications

The MyHope for Multiple Myeloma iOS and watchOS applications were a partnership between Celgene, Deloitte’s ConvergeHealth, and Apple. The primary objective was to facilitate a digital observational study via iOS and watchOS for patients diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma.

Highlights:

  • Customer research, persona identification, and application journey-mapping

  • Managed relationships across the partnership

  • Interactive wireframe prototypes

  • Leveraged and extended Apple frameworks (HealthKit, ResearchKit, CareKit)

  • Apple Enterprise Design Lab workshops with patients and care providers

  • iPhone and Apple Watch prototypes

  • Medical Legal Regulatory (MLR) design reviews

  • Coordinated global design/development teams

Timeline

2018 (10 months)
The project began with a series of rapid prototyping exercises to demonstrate concepts for various legal and medical reviews. After preliminary approvals, the team proceeded with customer research and design exploration labs with patients/care providers to refine functionality before entering into design and build sprint cycles.

Team

My Role: Creative Director / Experience Lead
Initially, my role was to advocate for human-centered design, assist with research, and create rapid prototypes alongside a Senior UI Designer. As we moved into the development phase, my role shifted to managing a global design team including time in Mumbai India. I also worked closely with client product owners and managed the relationship with partner stakeholder groups.
The team included: 1 Senior UI, 4 UX Designers, 3 UI Designers, 1 iOS Architect, 3 iOS Developers

Challenges

The patient demographic (elderly, male, often with other comorbidities) presented challenges to get significant dedicated research time. We were able to work with a number of patients at various stages of diagnosis, and backfilled our data with input from health care professionals and direct care providers (often a spouse or family member).

Outcomes

Bristol-Myers Squibb acquired Celgene in 2019 causing Deloitte to cease consulting work due to an existing audit relationship. The MyHope platform was passed to another vendor to finalize development. The overall platform and partnership with Apple has continued and been leveraged for several other similar use cases and clients.

Research

Patient App Journey

We leveraged extensive research on the stages of diagnosis and patient demographics conducted by the client. Our journey-mapping work focused on aligning those stages with app feature concepts and determining how the app could deliver value back to the patient community. We validated those milestones through research and usability sessions.

Dashboard

Based on feedback (and inspiration) from sessions at the Apple Enterprise Design Lab, the dashboard design was based on the ring concepts from watchOS.

Medication Adherence

Medication adherence is a significant marker for driving better patient outcomes, and it became a driving factor for the overall app experience.

Data Tracking & Reporting

In addition to medication adherence, the app was capable of tracking: observational survey data, symptoms, and daily check-ins. Data was tracked/graphed over time, and made available for patients to share with their health care providers and studies (based on permissions).

Design System

The best experience of the entire project occurred during one of our research design labs. We prepared Apple Watch prototypes for everyone to use: a mix of medical professionals, patients, and care providers. One patient, an 80 year-old in late stages of diagnosis, was routinely the first to complete our tasks - dissolving our concerns about technology, dexterity, and touch devices.
